Reef Building
Our flagship Sea Gardening Experience

Indigenous Sea Gardens produced bountiful seafood for centuries by focussing on reciprocity and the common good.

Our guided 3 day land based workshop includes the introductory Sea Gardening tour, in depth Power Point presentation, reef module practical skill development and construction, plus all equipment and materials needed, and an optional evening exploration program.
Some choose to stay on a couple more days at the Wharf Hub as volunteers to help with taking casts out of molds, concrete curing and undertake other associated marine ecological activites.
The 'Reef Building' retreat workshop aims to inculcate the development of a certain mindset that can be caught through a number of experiences we outline on our Ports of Call pages, and by exploring our 'Blogs'.
Any equipment required such as mountain bikes, kayaks, fishing rods are also included in the fee.
Although this workshop can be found on other sites eg newzealand.com, the 3 day Reef Building intensive is best booked directly from this web site.

Overnight accommodation at the Wharf Hub is available and included in your fee. It is a shared facilities experience which some see as an opportunity for meeting other similarly minded folk. But we accept this is not to everyone's taste, so staying locally and attending the workshop during the day is quite acceptable. Accommodation alternatives or adjustments can be made in your free quote.
As a precursory, backgrounding exploration of the local Opotiki Community REAF Trust web site is encouraged. (free) and its Facebook page 'communityreef' (also free).
A Certificate is later issued, crafted with your photo, module photo and deployed reef GPS location.
Fees for this guided three day voyage, including two nights accommodation at the Wharf Hub, (an adjustment can be made for accommodation elsewhere) two breakfasts, three lunches, two dinners, refreshments (alcohol free) are around $2500 per person.
